HP Recommended

My HO Officejet 8610 printer will not accept a new ink cartridge. It says the cartridge is damaged. I have tried to put it in several times; turned printer off & on several times; actually exchanged the ink to make sure it was not damaged and the printer will still not accept the cartridge. I saw on the message board someone w/same issue was told by an HO assistant that it was a hardware problem. I need the instructions on how to update the hardware if that is the case.
