HP DeskJet 2742e All-in-One Printer

We are receiving a message saying use setup cartridges. We don't have those; we have new ones. How do I bypass that?

@NicoleG2, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Use Setup Cartridges" message on your HP DeskJet 2742e indicates that the printer is still in its initial setup mode and requires HP Setup Cartridges to complete the activation process. Since you no longer have the setup cartridges, here are some possible solutions:

Perform a Semi-Full Reset

A semi-full reset can sometimes bypass the setup mode:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Press and hold the Resume (⚠️ or triangle) button and Power button simultaneously for about 15 seconds.
  5. Release both buttons and plug the printer back in.
  6. Turn the printer back on and check if the error clears.

Check for Instant Ink Enrollment

If your printer was enrolled in HP Instant Ink, you may be required to use Instant Ink-compatible cartridges. If this applies, try using an HP Instant Ink cartridge or check your HP Smart App for enrollment status.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
