I have a HP Officejet pro 8710 that uses the 952 cartridge's. They will not work since they are out of warranty. This does not make sense. The cartridge's are sealed from the factory. My OfficeJet error message says to contact HP Support "for more" and yet no one from HP has responded to my requests for troubleshooting.  Thank you.

Hi @coholm,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing a frustrating issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 not recognizing your 952 cartridges due to their warranty status. This can happen if the printer's firmware has been updated to reject cartridges that are out of warranty, or if the printer mistakenly believes the cartridges are expired or not genuine.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Check Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Ensure that the cartridges are indeed 952 cartridges and are compatible with the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710.

2. Reset the Printer:

  • Sometimes, resetting the printer can clear any errors.
  • Steps to reset:
    1. Turn on the printer.
    2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer while it's still on.
    3. Unplug the power cord from the power source.
    4. Wait for 60 seconds.
    5. Plug the power cord back into the power source and then into the printer.
    6. Turn the printer on.

3. Check Firmware Version:

  • If your printer has updated firmware, it might have restrictions that prevent the use of out-of-warranty or non-genuine cartridges.
  • To check and potentially downgrade the firmware:
    1. Go to the HP Customer Support website.
    2. Search for your printer model and navigate to the "Software and Drivers" section.
    3. Check if there is an older firmware version available and download it.
    4. Follow the instructions to install it on your printer.

4. Clean the Contacts:

  • Dust or debris on the cartridge or the printer’s contacts can cause recognition issues.
  • Steps to clean:
    1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
    2. Open the cartridge access door.
    3. Remove the cartridges.
    4. Using a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water, gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and in the printer.
    5. Let the contacts dry for about 10 minutes.
    6. Reinstall the cartridges, close the door, and turn on the printer.

5. Perform a Hard Reset:

  • A hard reset can sometimes clear errors related to cartridge recognition.
  • Steps to perform a hard reset:
    1. Turn the printer on and let it settle.
    2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer while it is still on.
    3. Disconnect any other cables, such as USB cables.
    4. Wait 2-3 minutes.
    5. Plug the power cord back in and reconnect any other cables.
    6. Turn the printer on and check if the error persists.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
