Magenta cartridge ran out.  Replacement cartridge not accepted by printer.  Says cartridge is continuous printing cartridge & printer not set up for that.  New cartridge from Office Depot. Sticker on cartridge says "hp 952".

@Disatisfied1010, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 is not accepting the replacement magenta cartridge because it is detecting it as a Continuous Ink Supply System (CISS) cartridge, which the printer is not configured for. Here are some steps to resolve the issue:

Check Cartridge Authenticity

  • Ensure the new cartridge is a genuine HP 952 and not a remanufactured or third-party cartridge.
  • Look for the HP security label on the packaging and verify it on HP’s authentication website.

Reinstall the Cartridge

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the magenta cartridge and inspect it for any protective tape or packaging material that might still be attached.
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly into the slot.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Reset the Printer

  • Remove all cartridges from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and wait 2-3 minutes.
  • Plug it back in, turn it on, and reinstall the cartridges.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Go to HP Support (HP Software & Driver Downloads) and check for firmware updates.
  • If an update is available, install it and restart the printer.

Run Printer Troubleshooter

  • On Windows 10, go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Select your printer and click Manage > Run the troubleshooter.

Disable Cartridge Protection (If Enabled)

  • Open the HP Smart app or Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering the printer’s IP address in a web browser.
  • Go to Settings > Printer Preferences and disable Cartridge Protection.

Try Another Cartridge

  • If possible, test a different magenta HP 952 cartridge to rule out a defective cartridge.

I hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
