Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 that will not print color.  I have tried cleaning the heads, multiple times.  Ensured that the cartridges are full, and removing and reinstalling drivers and the entire printer to no avail.

Hi @cpoross,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating this is, especially after trying all the right steps like cleaning printheads, reinstalling drivers, and confirming ink levels, yet your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 still won’t print in color. This issue usually points to either blocked color nozzles, print settings, or a hardware fault in the printhead

Step 1: Check Print Settings

  • On Windows 10:
    • Go to Control Panel → Devices and Printers → HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 → Printing Preferences.
    • Ensure Print in Grayscale is unchecked.
    • Select Color mode.

Step 2: Print a Diagnostic Report

  • On the printer:
    • Setup → Printer Maintenance → Print Quality Report.
  • If color blocks are missing or streaked, the issue is with ink flow or the printhead.

Step 3: Deep Clean Printhead

  • On the printer:
    • Setup → Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead.
  • Run Level 2 cleaning if prompted.
  • If still no color, proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Update Firmware

Step 5: Remove and Inspect Cartridges

  • Remove all color cartridges.
  • Check for:
    • Protective tape is still on the ink nozzle.
    • Dirty contacts clean gently with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
  • Reinsert firmly.

Step 6: If Still No Color

  • The printhead may be clogged beyond cleaning or have failed.
  • HP recommends replacing the printhead assembly if cleaning doesn’t restore color.
