Hi @Drgrant2
Welcome to the HP support community.
I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.
If your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is showing an "empty" message for a new magenta cartridge, here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:
1. Check Installation
- Remove and Reinstall the Cartridge: Carefully remove the magenta cartridge and check for any protective tape or packaging that might still be on it. Reinsert it firmly until it clicks into place.
2. Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Inspect the Contacts: Look at the gold contacts on the cartridge and the printer. If they appear dirty or smudged, gently clean them with a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab lightly moistened with water. Make sure to dry them completely before reinstalling.
3. Reset the Printer
- Power Cycle: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about a minute, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
4. Check for Firmware Updates
- HP Smart App: Use the HP Smart app or visit the HP support website to check for any firmware updates for your printer. An outdated firmware might cause cartridge recognition issues.
5. Use Genuine HP Cartridges
- Ensure that you're using genuine HP cartridges. Sometimes, third-party or refilled cartridges can cause recognition issues.
6. Check Printer Settings
- Print Quality Settings: Go into the printer settings and check if there’s an option to check ink levels or perform a cartridge check. Sometimes, running a cleaning cycle can help.
7. Perform a Printer Reset
- If the problem persists, try performing a factory reset on the printer:
- Navigate to the printer's menu and look for the "Settings" or "Tools" option.
- Look for an option to restore factory defaults and follow the prompts.
8. Last step: Test with Another Cartridge
- If possible, test with another new magenta cartridge to rule out the possibility of a defective cartridge.
I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
