@Favorandgrace, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Cartridge Recognition Issues on HP OfficeJet 4655!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If your HP OfficeJet 4655 is not recognizing a new color cartridge and instead identifies it as black, but it still prints in color, here are some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

Step 1: Check the Cartridge Installation

  1. Power On your Printer: Ensure that the printer is powered on.
  2. Open the Cartridge Access Door: Open the access door to the cartridge area.
  3. Ensure Correct Cartridge Placement: Remove the color cartridge and reinsert it, ensuring it clicks into place properly.
  4. Close the Cartridge Access Door: Close the door and check if the printer recognizes the cartridge correctly.

Step 2: Remove and Reinsert the Cartridge

  1. Turn Off the Printer: Power off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  2. Remove the Color Cartridge: Gently remove and inspect the cartridge for any packaging materials that might obstruct the contacts.
  3. Check for Obstructions: Make sure that there are no obstructions in the cartridge slot inside the printer.
  4. Reinsert the Cartridge: Reinsert the cartridge firmly and make sure it is seated correctly.

Step 3: Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  1. Power Off the Printer: Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  2. Clean the Cartridge and Printer Contacts:
    • Gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
    • Clean the corresponding contacts inside the printer carefully.
  3. Allow the Contacts to Dry: Wait for a few minutes to ensure the contacts are completely dry.

Step 4: Reset the Printer

  1. Turn Off and Unplug the Printer: Power off the printer and unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  2. Wait for 1-2 minutes: Leave the printer unplugged for about 1-2 minutes.
  3. Reconnect the Power Cord and Turn On the Printer: Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall outlet, and turn on the printer.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
