HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

My printer was only printing part of the page and smeared so I changed the "nearly full" HP Black 902XL cartridge with another HP Black 902XL and it wouldn't print at all.  Completed all the clean printheads functions many times, and still no ink will print on page. After trying to do partial reset using the Maintenance function on the screen, the error message is "resuming initialization" followed by " INSTALL CARTRIDGES: Use the cartridges that came with the printer" video animation and I cannot get off that screen.

I have bought 4 brand new HP BLACK 902XL cartridges and would hate to throw away all that $$$ plus the printer itself.  Any/All guidance would be appreciated!

Thanks

Hi @CharmedJones,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've already taken some troubleshooting steps, but let's try a few more to see if we can resolve the issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer. Here are some additional steps you can try.

Check Cartridge Installation:

  • Make sure that the cartridges are correctly installed. Open the printer cover and ensure that each cartridge is securely in place.
  • Remove and reinsert the cartridges to make sure they are properly seated.

Check for Protective Strips:

  • Sometimes, new cartridges come with protective strips or tapes that need to be removed before installation. Check that you have removed any protective covering from the cartridge's contacts.

Clean Electrical Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Remove the cartridges.
  • Wipe the electrical contacts of the cartridges and the printer with a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinstall the cartridges.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for a few minutes.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Update Firmware:

  • Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. You can check the HP website for firmware updates specific to your printer model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
