HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e All-in-One Printer

I bought this new printer and tried instant ink but I don't print enough to make a subscription worth it.  I cancelled the subscription and then bought new cartridges.  They worked to print for about 6 months and now they all of the sudden give me the error "The indicated cartridges have been recently identified, altered or cloned."  I'm extremely frustrated and am unhappy with HP.  Do I have to buy another set of top price cartridges?

Hi @tiredprinter5,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e All-in-One Printer displays an error message indicating that the cartridges have been recently identified, altered, or cloned, it generally means that the printer has detected non-HP cartridges or cartridges that have been refilled.

Here are the steps you can take to resolve this issue:

Use Genuine HP Cartridges:

  • Ensure that you are using genuine HP cartridges specifically designed for your printer model.
  • Non-HP cartridges or refilled cartridges can cause this error. Replace any non-HP cartridges with genuine ones.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power source.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

Restore Factory Settings:

  • Use the printer's control panel to navigate to the settings menu.
  • Look for an option to restore default or factory settings. Restoring the printer to its default settings can sometimes resolve cartridge errors.
  • Follow the prompts to complete the process.

Firmware Update:

  • Ensure your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. Firmware updates can help fix many issues. You can update the firmware using the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP Software and Drivers page.

Check Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Verify that the cartridges are compatible with your printer model. Each printer model requires specific cartridges. Check the printer manual or HP support website for information.

Reinsert Cartridges:

  • Open the cartridge access door and remove the indicated cartridges.
  • Inspect the contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer for any ink or debris. Clean them gently using a lint-free cloth.
  • Reinsert the cartridges firmly and ensure they are properly seated.
