Hi @Pat_Jay-,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M181fw is showing a message that the cartridges are locked due to containing a non-HP chip after reinstalling HP software or upgrading to Windows 11, you can try these steps.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Visit the HP support website and check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve issues with cartridge recognition.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a hard reset by turning off the printer, unplugging it from the power source, waiting for about 30 seconds, and then plugging it back in and turning it on.

Reinstall Printer Software:

  • Uninstall the current HP software from your computer.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Download and install the latest version of the HP software from the HP support website.

Check Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Ensure that you are using genuine HP cartridges. Non-HP or refilled cartridges may not be recognized by the printer.

Reinstall Cartridges:

  • Remove the cartridges from the printer and inspect them for any damage.
  • Reinsert the cartridges, ensuring they are securely seated.

These steps should help resolve the issue with your cartridges being locked.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
