HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer
macOS 10.15 Catalina

I installed a new Black Ink Cartridge. The printer worked fine until I put in the new cartridge. Now the printer will not work. It told me to contact HP for support. The message tells me it is a printer ink problem. I can not print. I tried unplugging and plugging back in then tried turning printer off and on.

I was going to sign up for Instant Ink but unable to do anything right now.

Hi @SLTP,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Officejet Pro 8610 is not recognizing the new black ink cartridge. Here are some troubleshooting steps to try.

Check the Cartridge Installation

  • Remove the black ink cartridge.
  • Make sure there’s no protective tape or packaging left on the cartridge.
  • Reinsert it firmly into the slot.

Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Take out the black cartridge.
  • Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
  • Let them dry completely, then reinstall the cartridge and power the printer back on.

Try an Older Cartridge (If Available)

  • Reinsert your previous black cartridge (even if it's low on ink) to see if the printer recognizes it.
  • If the old cartridge works, the new one might be defective.

Perform a Printer Reset

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from power, and wait for 2-3 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • If the printer has outdated firmware, it might reject some cartridges.
  • Try updating the firmware via HP Smart or the HP website.

Use Genuine HP Ink

  • If you’re using a third-party or refilled cartridge, the printer might not accept it.
  • If you’re using a genuine HP cartridge, check if it’s defective by trying a different one.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
