I just purchased a new HP61 ink cartridge set for my HP4500 Envy printer, when i install the black ink cartridge the printer says it is not compatible, but the color cartridge works just fine.   Any idea on what the issue is?  Bad cartridge?

Hi @JP6332 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with the black ink cartridge not being recognized as compatible with your HP 4500 Envy printer, while the color cartridge works fine. Here are some potential causes and solutions for this issue:

  • Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that you have purchased the correct ink cartridge for your printer. The HP 4500 Envy series typically uses the HP 61 cartridge, but it's important to confirm the model number. Make sure the cartridge is labeled as compatible with the HP 4500 Envy model.
  • Check Cartridge Installation: Sometimes, the cartridge might not be seated properly in the printer. Remove the black cartridge, inspect it for any protective tape or packaging still attached, and reinstall it, ensuring it's clicked into place securely.
  • Reset the Printer: Power cycle your printer by turning it off, unplugging it for about a minute, and then plugging it back in. This can sometimes resolve communication issues between the printer and the cartridge.
  • Try a Different Cartridge: If possible, try another black HP 61 cartridge to rule out the possibility of a defective cartridge. If the new one works, it's likely that the first cartridge is faulty.
  • Clean the Contacts: Check the metal contacts on both the cartridge and the printer where they connect. If they are dirty or covered in ink residue, it can interfere with proper communication. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and some water or isopropyl alcohol to clean both the cartridge contacts and the printer’s corresponding contacts.
  • Firmware Update: Occasionally, printer firmware can cause issues with cartridge recognition. Check if your printer has any available firmware updates and apply them if necessary.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
