HP Printhead cleaning does not produce better results. I don't print very often. The last time it did this I bought new cartridges, and then it worked. These new cartriges, after several months are now not able to be cleaned. Does HP ink dry up? Is the only way to fix this to buy new cartriges every two months?

Yes, HP ink cartridges can dry out over time, especially if you don’t print regularly. Inkjet printers rely on liquid ink, and when the printer sits unused for weeks or months, the ink in the nozzles can evaporate or harden, causing clogs that cleaning cycles often can’t fix.

How to Prevent This

  1. Print a small page every 1–2 weeks (even a color test page) to keep ink flowing.
  2. Store cartridges properly
    • Keep them installed in the printer.
    • Avoid extreme heat or cold.
  3. Use HP Genuine Ink; third-party inks often dry faster.


Is Buying New Cartridges Every Two Months the Only Fix?

Not necessarily! Here are alternatives:

  • Manual Cleaning: Remove the cartridge and gently clean the nozzle area with a lint-free cloth and distilled water (never tap water).
  • Soak Method: Place the nozzle end in a shallow dish of warm distilled water for 10–15 minutes, then dry and reinstall.
  • Printhead Replacement: If the printer uses a separate printhead (some HP models do), replacing that may solve recurring clogs.
  • Switch to HP Instant Ink: This subscription ensures fresh cartridges before they dry out.
