HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer, has been off for about 22 months.  I needed to scan a photo, but before I could scan, I started to get errors about the ink (I suspect it has dried-up)...

I tried removing the cartridges, but the printer still wouldn't let me scan.

What are some things I can try to fix this?  I do eventually want to resume printing, but right now, my need is to scan images.

Thank you!

Hi @Ink Issue,

I'd like to help!

I understand you are receiving a cartridge error and are unable to scan.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to scan unless you resolve the cartridge issue on the printer.

Try the steps below to resolve the error-

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.

  1. If your printer has a rechargeable battery, remove it.

  2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  4. Wait 60 seconds.

  5. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

    NOTE:

HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

  6. Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Clean the ink cartridge electrical contacts

Remove any debris or buildup from the contacts on the cartridges.

  1. Open the door or lid to the cartridge access area. Wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.

  2. Push in on the cartridge indicated in the error message to release it from the carriage.

    Removing the ink cartridge

  3. Wipe the copper-colored contact on the cartridge with a lint-free cloth.

Cleaning the contact on the ink cartridge

  4. Slide the cartridge into its color-coded slot until it clicks into place.

  5. Repeat these steps for any other cartridges indicated in the error message.

  6. Close the door or lid to the cartridge access area.

If the issue persists, I'd suggest you Contact HP in your region regarding the service options for your printer

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you for the suggestions.  I had to leave without trying anything, and won't be back there until February, maybe later...

In the meantime, I thought about ordering new cartridges so I will have them when I return, but I an uncertain if new cartridges will fix this, or if it is possible that old (dried/congealed?) ink was forced into the print mechanism when I tried to print last week?  If that is the case, where can I find details of how to clean the print heads &/or other parts that may have been impacted by the "old ink"?

My thanks in advance!

PS:  I did manage to scan by QUICKLY tapping the "Scan" icon just after turning the printer on -- it took 3 tries, but it did work.

Hi Jay,

Thanks for your follow-up.  I also found this suggestion for cleaning the PrintHeads

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printers-Archive-Read-Only/HP-6500-Office-jet-E709a-Black-printer-cart...

My ink cartridges are HP Brand, the 3rd party part is not  factor for me.  When I get back to the printer, I will check out the cartridges for blocked vents, and try cleaning the PrintHead.
