Replaced hp 61 tricolor cartridge on my HP ENVY 4502 as I have for several years...message "cartridge incompatable".....why?

Try these steps:

Ensure you are using the correct ink cartridge compatible with your HP ENVY 4502 printer. For the HP ENVY 4500 series in the United States, the compatible cartridges are:

  • Black ink cartridge: HP 61 Black
  • Tri-color ink cartridge: HP 61 Tri-color

It's important to use genuine HP cartridges to avoid compatibility issues. Counterfeit or refilled cartridges may cause errors.

Make sure the cartridge is properly installed:

  1. Remove the cartridge and inspect it for any damage or protective tape that may still be in place.
  2. Reinstall the cartridge ensuring it fits securely in the slot.

If the cartridge installation steps are unfamiliar, follow these instructions:

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Open the scanner lid.
  3. Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the access area.
  4. Wait for the carriage to become idle and silent.
  5. Lift the lid on the cartridge slot and gently push it back until it stops.
  6. Remove the old cartridge and insert the new HP 61 Tri-color cartridge at a slight upward angle with the contacts facing the rear of the printer.
  7. Close the lid on the cartridge slot to secure the cartridge.
  8. Close the cartridge access door and the scanner lid.

Additional Steps to Resolve "Incompatible Cartridge" Error

  1. Power Cycle: Turn off the printer, disconnect the power cable, wait for a minute, and reconnect the power cable. Turn the printer back on.
  2. Reinstall Cartridges: Remove and reinstall the cartridge, ensuring it is seated properly.
  3. Update Firmware: Kindly refer to this link to update your printer firmware.
