HP DeskJet 4255e All-in-One Printer
macOS 15.0 Sequoia

This printer is currently showing some kind of ink cartridge error, where after I restart the printer the screen initially displays a E0 error for several seconds, which then changes to a circling 0 with the ink warning light on. I reset everything, and put in a fresh ink cartridge, and the error is still there. I attempted to remove the printer from my account so I could add it again, but was told I could not remove it due to an instant ink subscription.

However, I cancelled my previous instant ink subscription 6 months ago, and have been using the printer with generic HP ink cartridges since then. I don't print much, so the current cartridge is the same as the ones I put in immediately after cancelling instant ink. For the past number of print jobs the black has been glitchy, streaking and missing in places on the paper, whereas the color was printing fine.

Now the printer won't connect to the ink cartridges at all, though it still shows accurate ink levels from the cartridges. This was the case even when the black ink wasn't printing properly.

I have tried rebooting the printer, restarting the network, removing and cleaning the cartridges. Nothing has worked.

I suspect the printer, for some reason, is attempting to read an instant ink cartridge. How do I properly remove the instant ink subscription and reset the printer?

I do not have an instant ink printer. My understanding is that if you run out of ink, or you cancel your subscription, you can use genuine Hewlett Packard cartridges either original or refilled. They must have an HP chip in the cartridge.
The below type is unlikely to work.

Note that this is a peer to peer forum and I am just the messenger of this bad news: Instant ink cartridges can only be used when the ink subscription is active.

If you have genuine HP cartridges (new or refilled) then possibly you just need to clean the printhead.

General advice on printhead cleaning is here.
This link shows cleaning the 8600 printhead and removal is shown here.

This is another type of printhead cleaning, different from the above.

Cleaning and removing ink is shown below by our "Scullery" team.

An HP original video on how to clean the printheads by our experts. Yes, this can get messy, but it works. If your ink levels are good but you are printing blank pages then this is likely the solution.

Official HP advice on cleaning.

Some printers have a printhead cleaning procedure.

To clean the printhead on an HP printer, access the printer settings through the HP Smart app, navigate to "Print Quality Tools," and select "Clean Printhead"; this will initiate a cleaning cycle where the printer will automatically run a cleaning process to clear any clogs in the printhead

Inkjet and printhead cleaning kits are available

Consumer inkjet printer printheads typically last for several years, with some lasting up to 10 years or even longer. However, the lifespan can vary greatly depending on usage, maintenance, and environmental factors.
