Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello I have a hp officejet 6958. I bought an ink cartridge for my printer (hp 902xl) when I installed it a message came up on the printer saying it is an older style ink cartridge that is not compatible with my printer. But this is what is in my printer now. It is a genuine hp cartridge

Hi @Joshua1982,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you might be experiencing a compatibility issue with the ink cartridge despite it being a genuine HP product. Sometimes, even genuine cartridges can have compatibility problems due to differences in firmware or other factors.

Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Restart the Printer: Turn off your printer, wait for a few minutes, and then turn it back on. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve compatibility issues.

Check for Firmware Updates: Make sure your printer has the latest firmware installed. HP occasionally releases firmware updates that address compatibility issues with ink cartridges. You can usually find firmware updates on the HP support website.

Reinstall the Cartridge: Try removing the cartridge from the printer and then reinstalling it. Make sure it is properly seated in the cartridge slot.

Clean Cartridge Contacts: Sometimes, dirt or debris on the cartridge contacts can interfere with the connection. Carefully clean the contacts on the cartridge with a soft, lint-free cloth and then reinstall it.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
