Hi @Nikko44, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP DeskJet 4222e All-in-One Printer is consuming ink too quickly and not printing black properly. Here are some troubleshooting steps to fix these issues:
1. Black Ink Not Printing (Only Color)
Since your prints appear yellow and pink, the black ink might not be working properly. Try these steps:
A. Check the Ink Levels
- Open the HP Smart app or Printer software on your computer.
- Look for Estimated Ink Levels.
- If the black cartridge is empty or low, replace it.
B. Run Printhead Cleaning
- Open HP Smart or HP Printer Assistant on your computer.
- Find the Printer Maintenance section.
- Select Clean Printhead.
- Try printing a test page to see if black ink appears.
C. Check Cartridge Installation
- Open the printer lid and ensure the cartridges are properly seated.
- Remove the black ink cartridge, wipe the nozzle with a lint-free cloth, and reinstall it.
D. Force Grayscale Printing
- When printing, go to Printer Properties.
- Select Print in Grayscale and choose Black Ink Only.
- Try printing again.

2. Ink Running Out Too Fast
If you've only printed 24 pages and used two sets of cartridges, something is wrong. Possible causes:
- The printer is using color ink even in grayscale mode.
- Ink may be drying up due to storage conditions.
- A firmware or driver issue might be affecting ink usage.
A. Update Printer Firmware
- Open HP Support website.
- Search for your printer model (DeskJet 4222e).
- Download and install the latest firmware update.
B. Disable Color Ink When Not Needed
- Go to Printer Preferences.
- Select Grayscale (Black Ink Only).
- Save the settings.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
