HP OfficeJet 8022 All-in-One Printer

After installing all new Instant Ink cartridges in the printer at the same time, the black text printed appropriately on documents, but the  colored text printed only in a light blue.  Removing/reinstalling the cartridges . . . turning off the printer power . . . all tried multiple times without success.  And when looking at the opening of the yellow ink cartridge, it’s partly green . . . like the blue ink is bleeding into the yellow one.

Hi @GHOSTUSER

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with an issue of ink leakage or misalignment in your HP OfficeJet 8022, which is affecting your print quality. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

1. Check for Leaking or Misinstalled Cartridges

Since you mentioned seeing green in the yellow ink cartridge, this could indicate that the blue ink is bleeding into it, possibly due to a leak or improper installation.

Remove and inspect each cartridge:

  • Take out the color cartridges (cyan, magenta, and yellow) and check for any visible leaks or ink residue on the contacts.
  • Make sure each cartridge is properly seated in its slot. The cartridge chips should be facing the correct direction, and the cartridge should click into place securely.

Check for ink residue:

  • Check the inside of the cartridge area for any spilled ink that could be interfering with the cartridges.

If any of the cartridges appear to be leaking or damaged, contact HP support for a replacement, especially since these are Instant Ink cartridges and should be under warranty.

2. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

Sometimes, ink issues arise because the contacts inside the printer or on the cartridges are dirty.

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the cartridge access door and remove the color cartridges.
  • Use a soft cloth or a paper towel lightly dampened with water (avoid harsh chemicals) to gently clean the copper-colored contact points inside the printer and on the cartridges.
  • Reinstall the cartridges, ensuring they are firmly and correctly seated.

3. Run Printer Diagnostics and Print Head Cleaning

Since the colors are printing incorrectly, there may be an issue with the printhead alignment or blockage.

  • Run the printer’s built-in diagnostic tool (you can find this in the printer settings, or via the HP Smart app if you're using it).
  • After that, run a printhead cleaning. This is often an option available in the printer's settings or via the HP Smart app on your phone or computer. You may need to run the cleaning process multiple times if the ink has dried or clogged the printheads.

4. Check for Firmware Updates

If the printer has firmware updates pending, this could be causing the issue.

  • Open the HP Smart app (or use the printer's built-in menu on the display panel).
  • Check for any available updates and install them, as updates may fix bugs related to printing quality.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
