Hi @Curly47,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand there might be an issue with the new black cartridge or the printer's ink system. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:
1. Check Cartridge Installation
- Make sure the black cartridge is properly installed. Remove it and reinsert it, ensuring it clicks into place.
2. Run a Printer Diagnostic
- Most HP printers have a built-in diagnostic tool. You can access it through the printer’s control panel or through the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device. Look for options such as "Print Quality Diagnostic" or "Clean Printhead."
3. Clean the Printhead
- Sometimes, the printhead may be clogged. You can clean it through the printer's maintenance menu. Here are the general steps:
- On the printer control panel, navigate to the "Setup" menu.
- Select "Tools" or "Printer Maintenance."
- Choose "Clean Printhead" or a similar option.
- You might need to run the cleaning cycle a few times to clear any clogs.
4. Align the Printhead
- Misalignment can also cause printing issues. Align the printhead using the printer's maintenance menu:
- Go to the "Setup" menu.
- Select "Tools" or "Printer Maintenance."
- Choose "Align Printhead."
5. Check for Firmware Updates
- Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check for updates via the HP Smart app or the HP website.
6. Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for a minute and then plug it back in and turn it on.
7. Verify Instant Ink Cartridge
- Make sure the Instant Ink cartridge is not defective. If possible, try using another black cartridge to see if the issue persists. If a new cartridge works, contact HP Instant Ink customer support for a replacement.
8. Check Printer Settings
- Ensure that your print settings are correctly configured. Sometimes, the printer might be set to print in color only or grayscale, which might cause issues with black ink.
9. Print a Test Page
- Print a test page to check if black ink is used. This can usually be done from the printer’s maintenance menu or the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
