Just like Bobl1, Older Generation Cartridge error message received.  My black cartridge ran out.  I replaced with a genuine 952XL cartridge, as before.  This time I got a "Older Generation Cartridge" error message.  What is wrong and how do I correct the problem?

Printer is OfficeJet 8740.

Hi @SimchaHalevi,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Older Generation Cartridge" error on your HP OfficeJet 8740 typically occurs when the printer does not recognize the new cartridge, which might be due to compatibility issues or an incorrect cartridge model. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Verify Cartridge Compatibility

Check Cartridge Model:

  • Ensure that you have installed the correct cartridge model for your HP OfficeJet 8740. For this model, the correct cartridges are usually the HP 952 or 952XL series.

Verify Cartridge Version:

  • Make sure the cartridge is a genuine HP 952XL cartridge and not an older or incompatible version.

2. Inspect and Reinstall the Cartridge

Remove and Reinstall:

  • Turn Off Printer: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open Cartridge Door: Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove Cartridge: Carefully remove the new cartridge.
  • Reinstall Cartridge: Reinstall the cartridge, ensuring it is properly seated and clicks into place.

Check for Protective Tape:

  • Remove Tape: Ensure that all protective tape or plastic has been removed from the cartridge. Sometimes the protective strip can prevent the cartridge from being recognized.

3. Clean Cartridge Contacts

Inspect Cartridge Contacts:

  • Check Contacts: Look at the metal contacts on the cartridge and inside the cartridge slot for any dirt or residue.

Clean Contacts:

  • Use a Lint-Free Cloth: Gently wipe the contacts with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab slightly moistened with distilled water. Avoid touching the contacts with your fingers.

4. Update Printer Firmware

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • HP Support Website: Visit the HP Support website and search for your HP OfficeJet 8740 model.
  • Download Firmware: Look for any available firmware updates and follow the instructions to update your printer’s firmware.

Install Update:

  • Follow Instructions: Install the firmware update and restart your printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

None of this applies to my situation.  Another cartridge from the same package - it was a two-cartridge item - was installed and is working.  This seems to be a problem with that cartridge.  So my purchase of two (in one package) cost me twice as much, as one of the cartridges just didn't work.
