@Capt023, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
If your HP Smart Tank 5101 All-in-One Printer continues to blink the Attention light and the K symbol despite attempts to reset the printer and reinstall the printheads, follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
Determine Which Printhead Caused the Error
- Identify Error Type:
- The blinking Attention (!)[
] and the K (black printhead) symbol indicate a problem with the Black printhead.
- If both Tri-color and Black symbols blink, both printheads are experiencing issues.
- The blinking Attention (!)[
Check the Printheads
Ensure Full Ink Tanks:
- Make sure the ink tanks are at least half full.
- Check that paper is loaded into the input tray.
Access the Printhead:
- Open the ink access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
- Ensure the printhead cover is properly closed. If open, close it and check if the error persists.
Inspect the Printhead:
- Open the printhead cover by pressing the blue button on the printhead carriage.
- If checking the Black printhead, gently press down on it to release and remove it from its slot.
- Ensure the plugs and tape from the printhead contacts have been removed:
-
- Reinsert the printhead into its slot at a slight upward angle until it snaps into place.
Close the Printhead Cover:
- Close the printhead cover, then the ink access door.
Align the Printheads:
- Follow the control panel prompts to print an Alignment Page and follow the instructions on the page to align the printheads. If the printer does not have a control panel, an alignment page will print automatically.
Reset the Printer
- Turn Off the Printer:
- Press the power button to turn off the printer. If it does not turn off, disconnect the power cord.
- Unplug and Wait:
- Unplug the power cord from the power source. Wait for 60 seconds.
- Reconnect:
- Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet and then reconnect it to the printer.
- Turn On the Printer:
- Turn on the printer to complete the reset process.
I hope this helps.
