Hello,

I have a HP Office Jet Pro 8610.  I've had it for a while and never have had this happen.  I ran out of the yellow ink cartridge.  I replaced it.  Then, even though it didn't tell me it was low, it now said the Cyan (blue) cartridge was depleted. I replaced it.  Now it tells me there is a problem with a cartridge and has the Y in yellow on the screen.  It's a brand new cartridge. I was showing the yellow ink as full - now it shows it as empty.  This process has been going on for over a week!  I've turned off the printer and unplugged it to reset.  The yellow cartridge is still full!

Do I just order yet another yellow cartridge?

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 is having trouble recognizing the new yellow ink cartridge. Since you've already tried restarting the printer, let's go through some troubleshooting steps before considering a replacement:

1. Remove and Reinsert the Cartridge

  1. Turn OFF the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the ink cartridge door and remove the yellow cartridge.
  3. Check for any protective tape or covering on the cartridge (sometimes, even if removed, some residue might remain).
  4. Clean the cartridge contacts (see below).
  5. Reinsert the yellow cartridge and push it in firmly until it clicks.
  6. Close the printer and plug it back in.

2. Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts

  1. Take a lint-free cloth (or coffee filter) and lightly dampen it with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol (90%+).
  2. Gently wipe the gold/copper contact chips on the yellow cartridge.
  3. Also, wipe the corresponding metal contacts inside the printer.
  4. Let them dry for a few minutes, then reinstall the cartridge.

3. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Go to HP Software & Drivers and enter your printer model.
  • Download and install any available firmware updates.
  • Some HP updates fix cartridge recognition issues.

4. Reset the Printer

  1. Turn OFF the printer and unplug it.
  2. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds.
  3. Leave the printer unplugged for 5-10 minutes.
  4. Plug it back in and turn it ON.

5. Try Another Yellow Cartridge

If the issue persists, the yellow cartridge may be defective. Try:

  • Reinstalling your old yellow cartridge (even if empty) to see if the error disappears.

6. Check Ink Cartridge Authenticity

If you're using third-party (non-HP) ink, HP printers sometimes block them. If so:

  • Try a genuine HP yellow cartridge.
  • Disable HP Cartridge Protection in the printer settings (if applicable).

Let me know how it goes! 😊
