HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

HP Envy 7640 prints only in black ink on computer requests. Prints in both color and black ink when using I-Pad. It was not a problem with Windows 10. My Windows 10 computer was a Dell, but it was too old to upgrade to Windows 11.  This started when got a new HP computer with Windows 11.

Thanks for any suggestions

Hi @gabbee2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like a frustrating issue! Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem with your HP Envy 7640 printing only in black ink from your Windows 11 computer.

Check Printer Settings:

  • Open the Control Panel on your computer and go to Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click on your HP Envy 7640 and select Printer properties.
  • In the Color tab, ensure that Print in Grayscale is not selected. If it is, uncheck it.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for your Envy 7640 compatible with Windows 11.
  • Install the updated drivers and restart your computer.

Change Print Preferences:

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Click on your printer, then select Manage and Printing preferences.
  • Ensure that the color option is selected, and check if there’s a setting for grayscale or black and white printing that might be enabled.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Make sure your Windows 11 is fully updated. Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any available updates.

Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. This tool can help diagnose and fix printing issues.

Reset the Printing System:

  • Open the Settings app and go to Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Remove the HP Envy 7640 printer from the list.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Re-add the printer by selecting Add a printer or scanner.

Test Printing from Different Applications:

  • Try printing from different applications (like Word, Adobe Reader, etc.) to see if the problem persists across all software.

Use a Different Connection Method:

  • If you’re connected via Wi-Fi, try switching to a USB connection temporarily to see if that resolves the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
