Hi @Linda782,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "incompatible ink cartridge" error on your HP ENVY 4500 E-All-In-One Printer can be caused by several issues. Here are some steps to help you resolve the problem.
Verify Cartridge Compatibility:
- Make sure that you are using genuine HP ink cartridges that are compatible with your printer model. The HP ENVY 4500 typically uses HP 61 or HP 301 ink cartridges.
Reinstall the Ink Cartridges:
- Turn on the printer.
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Wait for the cartridge carriage to stop moving.
- Remove the ink cartridges from the printer.
- Check for any protective tape still attached to the cartridges and remove it if necessary.
- Reinsert the ink cartridges into the appropriate slots, making sure they are firmly seated.
Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Remove the ink cartridges.
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the ink cartridges and inside the printer.
- Allow the contacts to dry for a few minutes before reinserting the cartridges.
Restart the Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Check if the error message persists.
Update Printer Firmware:
- Ensure that your printer firmware is up to date. You can check for updates on the HP website or through the HP Smart app.
Reset the Printer:
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and then reconnect it to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and check if the error is resolved.
Try Another Cartridge:
- If possible, try using another set of genuine HP ink cartridges to see if the issue is with the specific cartridges you are using.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
