My HP 7740 printer does not accept genuine HP 952 XL Black Ink Cartridges. It was EXPENSIVE! It was a recent purchase, too. I want an explanation for why HP Printers no longer allow genuine HP cartridges??????  What a nightmare!

Hi @SamuelPenrod,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Verify Cartridge Authenticity:

  • Ensure that the cartridge is a genuine HP product. Look for the HP security label on the packaging to check for authenticity.

Check for Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Confirm that the HP 952 XL Black Ink Cartridge is compatible with the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 model. Sometimes, packaging can look similar for different models.

Reinstall the Cartridge:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it. Open the ink cartridge access door, remove the cartridge, and gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth. Reinstall the cartridge and ensure it clicks securely into place.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Visit the HP Support website to check for the latest firmware updates, and follow the instructions to update if necessary.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a basic reset by unplugging the printer for about 60 seconds and then plugging it back in. This can often resolve minor issues.

Check for Error Messages:

  • If there are specific error messages, refer to them for guidance or search them on the HP Support page for more detailed troubleshooting.

Cartridge Error Bypass (Temporary Solution):

  • Occasionally, bypassing the cartridge error by pressing "OK" can work, but it's recommended only as a temporary measure while waiting for a more permanent fix or support.

I hope this helps.
