HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP 7740 printer is giving me the message "This printer is not designed for continuous ink systems. To resume printing

remove continuous ink system and install genuine HP cartridges". It's referencing only the Cyan and Yellow cartridges. I have replaced the cartridges several times. I've only ever used genuine HP cartridges. I've tried everything their online help has advised to no avail. I don't even know what a continuous ink system is. None of the cartridges appear to be leaking. Any ideas?

Hi @JSPS2025,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

1. Verify Cartridge Authenticity

Ensure that the cartridges are indeed genuine HP cartridges. Sometimes counterfeit cartridges can appear genuine.

2. Clean Cartridge Contacts

  1. Turn Off Printer:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Remove Cartridges:
    • Open the cartridge access door and remove the Cyan and Yellow cartridges.
  3. Clean Contacts:
    • Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to clean the copper contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  4. Reinsert Cartridges:
    • Allow the contacts to dry and then reinsert the cartridges.
  5. Restart Printer:
    • Close the cartridge access door, plug the printer back in, and turn it on.

3. Update Printer Firmware

An outdated firmware can cause various issues, including cartridge errors.

  1. Visit HP Support:
  2. Download Firmware:
    • Download the latest firmware update for your printer.
  3. Install Firmware:
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to install the firmware.

4. Reset Printer

Resetting the printer can sometimes resolve errors.

  1. Turn Off Printer:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Wait:
    • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  3. Plug in and Turn On:
    • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

5. Check for Cartridge Compatibility

Ensure that the cartridges you are using are the correct ones for your printer model. The HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 uses HP 952/953/956/957/958/959 series cartridges.

6. Inspect Cartridge and Printer for Damage

Look for any visible signs of damage or leakage on the cartridges and inside the printer.

I hope this helps.
