It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 is able to print color copies but not color documents from your desktop, which suggests a software or driver-related issue rather than a hardware problem. Here are some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

 

Check Printer Preferences

  1. Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click on HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 and select Printing Preferences.
  3. Go to the Paper/Quality or Advanced tab.
  4. Ensure that Print in Grayscale is not selected. If it is, change it to Color.
  5. Click Apply and OK.

Check Printer Settings in the Application

  1. Open the document you want to print.
  2. Click on File > Print.
  3. Select HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 from the printer list.
  4. Click on Printer Properties or Preferences.
  5. Make sure the Color option is selected instead of Black & White or Grayscale.
  6. Click OK, then print the document.

Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

Update the driver:

  • Go to Device Manager (Press Win + X and select it).
  • Expand Printers, right-click HP OfficeJet Pro 8740, and select Update Driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for drivers and install any updates found.

Reinstall the driver:

  • Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall the HP printer software.
  • Visit HP's official support page and download the latest drivers for your printer model.
  • Install the driver and restart your computer.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor

  1. Download and install HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  2. Open the tool and select your printer.
  3. Click Fix Printing and follow the on-screen instructions.
