I'm just setting up a used HP Photosmart 5520. I was able to locate the driver however I have a message saying carriage jam. I have looked at other solutions and tried what they said but this carriage is jammed all the way to the right hand side and I can't get it to move. It is **bleep** so far over that it is covered by the plastic little area that it goes under. So I can't reach the ink or anything just the edge of it.

Hi @Nativecrystal,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Photosmart 5520 is showing a "carriage jam" error and the carriage is stuck all the way to the right, here are some steps you can take to resolve the issue:

1. Power Cycle the Printer

Turn Off the Printer:

  • Press the power button to turn off the printer.

Unplug the Printer:

  • Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and wait for about 60 seconds.

Plug the Printer Back In:

  • Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on. Sometimes, a power cycle can help reset the carriage.

2. Check for Obstructions

Inspect the Printer Internally:

  • Look inside the printer for any visible obstructions or debris that might be blocking the carriage.

Remove Paper or Debris:

  • Carefully remove any paper or foreign objects that may be causing the jam. Use a flashlight to get a better view inside the printer.

3. Manually Move the Carriage

Turn Off the Printer:

  • Ensure the printer is off and unplugged to avoid any electrical hazards.

Gently Move the Carriage:

  • Carefully try to manually move the carriage towards the center of the printer. Use slow and gentle pressure to avoid damaging the printer.

Avoid Force:

  • If you encounter resistance, do not force the carriage. Instead, check for additional obstructions or misalignments.

4. Clean the Carriage and Guides

Inspect Carriage and Guides:

  • Check the carriage and its guides for any ink or debris buildup.

Clean the Area:

  • If there is visible ink or dust, use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water to clean the area. Avoid using harsh chemicals or solvents.

5. Reset the Printer

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • With the printer turned off and unplugged, hold down the power button for 15 seconds. This can help reset internal components.

Turn On the Printer:

  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on. Check if the carriage moves correctly.

6. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

  • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for your HP Photosmart 5520.
  • Uninstall the current drivers from your computer and reinstall the updated drivers.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
