My colors have faded, they are streaking. I do not use the printer very much, my ink should not be low.

Hi @reedhq,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Fading and streaking in printed colors can be frustrating. Even if you don't use your printer frequently, a few factors can cause these issues. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the problem:

1. Check Ink Levels

Even if you don't use the printer often, ink levels can still be a factor. Ensure that your ink cartridges are not empty or low:

  • Check Ink Levels: Access the printer’s control panel or use the printer’s software on your computer to check the ink levels.
  • Replace Cartridges: If any cartridges are low or empty, replace them with new ones.

2. Perform Print Head Cleaning

Print head clogs can cause faded or streaky prints. Most printers have a cleaning function:

  • Access Cleaning Function: Go to the printer’s menu on the control panel or through the printer’s software on your computer.
  • Run Cleaning Cycle: Follow the prompts to run a cleaning cycle. You may need to run it more than once to clear stubborn clogs.

3. Align the Print Head

Misalignment can lead to streaking and poor color quality:

  • Print Head Alignment: Use the printer’s control panel or software to initiate a print head alignment. This process adjusts the print head to ensure proper alignment for accurate color printing.

4. Check for Air in the Cartridges

Air bubbles can cause poor print quality. If you have recently installed new cartridges, they may need to be primed:

  • Prime Cartridges: Follow the HP instructions to prime or shake the cartridges gently (if recommended).

5. Inspect and Clean the Print Head Manually

Sometimes manual cleaning is necessary:

  • Remove Cartridges: Turn off the printer and carefully remove the ink cartridges.
  • Clean Print Head: Use a lint-free cloth and distilled water or a print head cleaning solution to gently clean the print head. Be careful not to touch the nozzles directly.

6. Check Paper Quality and Settings

Paper quality and settings can impact print quality:

  • Use Recommended Paper: Make sure you’re using the correct type and quality of paper for your printer.
  • Check Printer Settings: Ensure that the print settings match the paper type and quality you are using.

7. Update Printer Firmware and Drivers

Outdated firmware or drivers can cause printing issues:

  • Update Firmware: Check the HP website for any available firmware updates for your printer model.
  • Update Drivers: Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your computer.

8. Run Printer Diagnostics

Many printers come with diagnostic tools:

  • Run Diagnostics: Use the printer’s built-in diagnostic tools or software to identify and troubleshoot issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
