@Theresa789, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP printer is having trouble detecting the toner cartridge. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve this issue:
Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure the toner cartridge is properly installed. Remove and reinstall the cartridge, making sure it clicks into place.
Remove Protective Tape: If there is any protective tape or plastic cover on the toner cartridge, remove it. This can sometimes prevent the printer from detecting the cartridge.
Reset the Printer: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source for about 1 minute. Plug it back in and turn the printer on. This can reset the internal sensors.
Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Use a soft cloth or a can of compressed air to gently clean the metal contacts on both the toner cartridge and inside the printer. Dust or debris on the contacts can prevent the printer from recognizing the cartridge.
Check for Compatibility: Make sure the toner cartridges are compatible with your specific printer model. Using the wrong ones can lead to errors.
Update Printer Firmware: Occasionally, a firmware update can resolve issues related to toner detection. Check the HP support website for your printer model and see if there are any available updates.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for your reply but it's not the printer that's the problem. Everything says it's running fine my printer app, the printer itsself and computer says the printer is ready to go until I hit print then it says check toner / no ink

Hi @Theresa789,
Thank you for the response:
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor
This tool is your best friend for weird software hiccups like this.
Download from here: HP Print and Scan Doctor
Open it, select your printer, and let it run diagnostics, it often resets miscommunications like these.
Clear the Print Spooler (Windows)
Sometimes your system holds on to old data that throws ink/toner errors. Here’s how:
Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
Find Print Spooler, right-click it, and select Stop.
Go to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete all files inside (don’t worry, they’re just stuck jobs).
Go back to services.msc and restart the Print Spooler.
Then try printing again.
Reinstall or Update the Printer Driver
Open Device Manager > Printers
Right-click your HP printer > Uninstall device
Go to HP’s Driver Page for your model, download the latest software, and reinstall it fresh.
This helps if your driver is glitching out during the actual print process.
Check Default Printer & App Settings
Make sure your HP printer is set as the default printer (Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners).
If you're printing from a specific app (Word, PDF viewer, etc.), double-check the print settings inside that app for toner/ink status checks or "advanced" driver settings.
I hope this helps.
