Hi @Trout-Fisher,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP ENVY 5020 All-In-One Printer is producing photos with vertical bands, it could be due to several factors. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.

Check the Paper:

  • Ensure that you are using the correct type of photo paper that is compatible with your printer. Using the wrong type of paper can lead to print quality issues.

Inspect the Print Cartridges:

  • Check the ink or toner cartridges for any damage or leaks. If the cartridges are damaged or leaking, they may need to be replaced.

Align the Print Head:

  • Most printers have a function to align the print head. This can help ensure that the ink is distributed evenly across the page. Refer to your printer's user manual for instructions on how to perform a print head alignment.

Clean the Print Head:

  • If the print head is clogged, it can result in vertical lines on your photos. Most printers have a cleaning utility that you can run to clean the print head. Again, consult your printer's manual for guidance.

Check Print Quality Settings:

  • Make sure that you have selected the appropriate print quality settings in your printer's software. Higher-quality settings will generally produce better results but may take longer to print.

Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • Outdated or corrupt printer drivers can lead to print quality issues. Check the manufacturer's website for the latest drivers and update your printer's drivers if necessary.

Inspect the Printer Rollers:

  • Dust and debris on the printer's rollers can also affect print quality. Gently clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth or a roller cleaning kit.

Test on Different Software/Devices:

  • Try printing the same photo from a different computer or device to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is related to the printer or the specific device/software you are using.

Perform a Test Print:

  • Most printers have a built-in test print function. Use this to print a test page and see if the vertical bands are present on the test page. If they are, it indicates a printer issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
