Hi @BPMRBMW ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the issue you're experiencing with your HP Officejet Pro 8600 is frustrating, especially since you're using new, original HP cartridges. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot the problem:

1. Verify the Cartridge

  • Inspect the Cartridge: Ensure there’s no visible damage, such as leaks or cracks.
  • Check the Contacts: Clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge gently with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water. Allow it to dry completely.
  • Reinstall the Cartridge: Reinsert the yellow cartridge firmly into its slot.

2. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and power it on.
  • Check if the error persists.

3. Reset the Printer

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Turn on the printer and see if the error resolves.

4. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

Outdated firmware can sometimes misinterpret cartridge status.

  • Download the latest firmware for the HP Officejet Pro 8600 from the HP support site.
  • Install it following the on-screen instructions.

5. Try Another Yellow Cartridge

Even though the cartridge is new, it might be defective. If possible:

  • Use a different yellow cartridge to rule out an issue with the current one.

6. Inspect the Printer for Errors

Clean the Printhead Contacts:

  1. Open the printer and remove all cartridges.
  2. Locate the printhead contacts (inside the cartridge slots) and gently clean them with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
  3. Let them dry and reinstall the cartridges.

Run a Printhead Cleaning: If you manage to bypass the error, use the printer’s menu to perform a Printhead cleaning.

7. Factory Reset the Printer

A factory reset can help clear persistent errors:

  1. On the printer control panel, access Settings > Tools > Restore Factory Defaults.
  2. Confirm the reset and reconfigure the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
