Microsoft Windows 11

I get emails from HP stating that I am near the end of my printing plan and need to pay more, yet I have 6 unopened cartridges (3 packs) at home. So how can I be printing above my plan?

Hi @GDP78,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you’re encountering an issue with your HP Instant Ink plan where you're receiving notifications about nearing the end of your plan, despite having unused cartridges at home. Here are some steps to help you resolve this issue:

1. Verify Your HP Instant Ink Plan

Check Your Plan Details:

  • Log in to your HP Instant Ink account at HP Instant Ink to review your current plan details and usage. Verify the number of pages included in your plan and your current usage.

Review Usage:

  • Look at the “Usage” section in your account to see how many pages you’ve printed compared to your plan’s limit. This can help determine if there’s been an increase in print volume or if there might be an error.

2. Confirm Cartridge Status

Check Cartridge Status:

  • Verify that your printer is recognizing the cartridges correctly. Sometimes, if a cartridge is not installed properly or if there’s an issue with the cartridge, it might affect your print count.

Inspect Cartridges:

  • Ensure that the cartridges you have are compatible with your printer model and are still within their usable dates. Expired or incompatible cartridges might cause issues.

3. Examine Print Counts

Check Print History:

  • Sometimes, large or multiple print jobs might exceed your plan’s limits. Review your print history if possible to identify if there were any large print jobs that contributed to the high page count.

Monitor Printing Patterns:

  • If you’re printing more frequently than usual, it could be affecting your plan. Consider adjusting your printing habits or reviewing your plan options.

4. Check for Errors or Misconfigurations

Verify Printer Settings:

  • Ensure your printer settings are correctly configured and that it’s properly reporting page counts to HP Instant Ink. Check the settings in the HP Smart app or through your printer’s control panel.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. Firmware updates can fix bugs and improve compatibility with HP Instant Ink.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
