Hi @JohnDReill,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your new HP 304 black ink cartridge is not being recognized by your HP DeskJet 3760 printer, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve the issue. Here’s a comprehensive guide:

1. Check Cartridge Installation:

  • Reinstall Cartridge: Turn on the printer and open the cartridge access door. Remove the black ink cartridge and then reinsert it carefully, ensuring it clicks into place.
  • Verify Placement: Make sure the cartridge is installed in the correct slot and seated properly.

2. Check Cartridge Protection Tape:

  • Remove Tape: Ensure that any protective tape or plastic cover has been completely removed from the cartridge. Sometimes, leftover tape can prevent the cartridge from being recognized.
  • Clean Contacts: Gently wipe the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with a soft, lint-free cloth.

3. Clean Cartridge and Printer Contacts:

  • Use a Lint-Free Cloth: Lightly moisten the cloth with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol. Gently clean the contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer.
  • Dry Thoroughly: Ensure everything is completely dry before reinserting the cartridge.

4. Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Update Firmware: Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Visit the HP website or use the HP Smart app to check for and install any available firmware updates.

5. Reset Printer:

  • Power Cycle: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Check Cartridge Recognition: After the printer restarts, check if the cartridge is recognized.

6. Try the Cartridge in Another Printer:

  • Test Cartridge: If possible, try the black cartridge in another compatible HP printer to determine if the cartridge itself might be defective.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
