My color HP65 cartridge ran out.  My black and white is an HP65XL, new and fairly full.  Replaced the color with an HP65 cartridge (not XL).  I read you can use an XL or standard together with no issue.  Would not align correctly however and went to print default.  The color would not show full however, the black and white did.  Then after several attempts to take the cartridges out and put back in to try and align, the color now shows full, but the full black and white is showing empty even though it's clearly not empty.  Tried several attempts to align, but alignment page is weird and will not straighten out.  HP will not speak with me unless my printer is still under warranty.   We tried unplugging for 60 seconds and plugging back in.

Welcome to the HP support community.

Clean the electrical contacts

  1. Turn the printer on.

  2. Open the door to access the cartridges.

  3. Wait until the carriage stops moving before you continue.

  4. Remove the cartridge indicated in the error message from its slot, holding it by its side.

       CAUTION:

Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

  5. Remove any protective tape that still might be on the contacts.

       CAUTION:

Do not touch or try to remove the copper electrical strip.

Remove the plastic tape and do not touch the contacts or ink nozzles

  6. Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water, and then clean only the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge.

  7. Lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water, and then clean the electrical contacts in the carriage, located inside the printer.

  8. Wait 10 minutes for the contacts to dry.

  9. Reinsert the cartridge.

    • Insert the black cartridge into the right slot.

    • Insert the tri-color cartridge into the left slot.

  10. Repeat these steps for the other cartridge, if necessary.

  11. Close the cartridge access door.

  12. If the error persists, repeat the previous steps to clean the cartridge and carriage contacts a second time.

  13. Check for the error message.

Thank you very much for your advice on cleaning the cartridge.  I did see that a lot when I was trying to troubleshoot.  What I found is that my new HP65 Color was not compatible with the HP65 XL Black and White Cartridge.  It appears I need to have two standard or two XL's in there.  I thought I read online that you could mix the XL and standard cartridges, but for my Envy 5055, it doesn't work.  My problem is solved though and again, appreciate your advice.  I will save the almost full Black and White XL and buy my color cartridge in XL next time so they're compatible as to not lose a full XL HP cartridge.
