New black ink cartridge is shown as full by printer but NO ink comes out, document is blank. Color cartridges are fine and old black cartridge worked but was obviously running low (blank spots in print). Two new HP brand cartridges did the same thing.

Hi @AYHCapeCod ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing issues with a new black ink cartridge in your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer, and the printer indicates that the cartridge is full but no ink is coming out, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take:

Check the Cartridge Installation: Ensure that the black ink cartridge is properly installed. Remove the cartridge and reinsert it, making sure it clicks into place securely. Also, check for any protective tape or plastic cover on the cartridge that may need to be removed before installation.

Clean the Printhead: Over time, printheads can become clogged with dried ink. Most printers have a built-in printhead cleaning utility. You can access this through the printer software on your computer or directly on the printer's control panel. Run the printhead cleaning process to see if it resolves the issue.

Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. Manufacturers often release firmware updates that can address various issues, including problems with ink cartridges. Visit the HP support website to check for the latest firmware for your printer model.

Run a Printer Diagnostic: Most printers have a diagnostic or maintenance tool that can help identify and resolve printing issues. Look for a "diagnose" or "maintenance" option in your printer software and run the diagnostic to see if any issues are detected.

Perform a Manual Cleaning: If the printhead cleaning doesn't resolve the issue, you may need to perform a manual cleaning. Consult your printer's user manual for instructions on how to clean the printhead manually.

Check for Ink System Issues: Some printers have an ink system that includes tubes and reservoirs. If there's a problem with the ink delivery system, it can affect printing. Check for any visible issues with the ink system, such as leaks or blockages.

HP OfficeJet 6900, 8010, 8020, 8030 printers - No black ink, wrong colors, other print quality issue...

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
