Just installed new ink cartridges in my Envy Photo 7800 Series printer and an error message says that the cartridges are not communicating with the printer.  I have tried turning off and on computer, cleaning the cartridges, reinstalling them several times.  I think it is the black cartridge that is no communicating.

Hi @Pat703,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Verify Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Ensure that the cartridges you are using are compatible with the HP Envy Photo 7800 Series. Incompatible cartridges can cause communication errors.

Inspect Cartridge and Printer Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power outlet.
  • Carefully remove the cartridges and inspect the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and the contact points inside the printer.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the cartridge contacts and printer contact points. Allow them to dry completely before reinserting.

Reinsert the Cartridges:

  • Reinsert the cartridges firmly into their respective slots. Ensure that they click into place securely.
  • Close the cartridge access door and check for error messages on the printer display.

Reset the Printer:

  • Unplug the printer from the power source for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the communication between the printer and cartridges.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Visit the HP Support website to check for and install any available firmware updates for your printer model. Firmware updates can resolve issues related to cartridge recognition.

Test with Another Cartridge or Printer:

  • If possible, try using another black cartridge to see if the issue persists. Alternatively, test the cartridge in a different compatible printer if available.

Disable Cartridge Protection (Optional):

  • If previously enabled, consider checking the printer settings to ensure "Cartridge Protection" is disabled. This option is often found in the printer software or on the printer’s display settings.

I hope this helps.
