HP OfficeJet 6958 All-in-One Printer

I replaced the ink cartridge, 902XL in my HP Officejet 6958 with the 2nd ink cartridge in a pack brought from Costco, first cartridge worked fine now 2nd cartridge from same pack show error message saying “older generation cartridge”. Why would this happen?

There could be a few reasons why your HP OfficeJet 6958 is displaying an error message stating that the new ink cartridge is an "older generation" cartridge. Here are some possible explanations and steps you can take to resolve the issue:

Compatibility Issues:

  • Check if the new cartridge is indeed compatible with your HP OfficeJet 6958. Make sure it's the correct cartridge model (902XL).
  • Ensure that you purchased genuine HP cartridges, as third-party or counterfeit cartridges may cause compatibility issues.

Firmware Update:

  • HP printers often receive firmware updates, and sometimes these updates include changes in cartridge compatibility.
  • Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer on the HP support website. Updating the firmware may resolve the compatibility issue.

Cartridge Installation:

  • Ensure that the new cartridge is installed correctly. Open the printer cover, remove the cartridge, and reinsert it carefully, making sure it clicks into place.

Clean Contacts:

  • Check the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer. Dust or ink residue on the contacts can interfere with communication.
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to clean the contacts on both the cartridge and the printer.

Check Cartridge Expiration Date:

  • Ensure that the second cartridge is not expired. Cartridges have an expiration date, and using an expired cartridge may cause issues.

Verify Cartridge Authenticity:

  • Verify the authenticity of the cartridge by checking the security label and QR code on the packaging. Counterfeit cartridges may not work properly.
