HP8720. I have been using this printer, with no problems at all, for several years. Recently, I was out-of-town for a couple months, so unplugged the printer. When I returned, and powered it back up, I got the message, "New, unused cartridges must be used for startup." This is not really a "startup" and the installed cartridges had plenty of ink. I tried cleaning the contacts, unplugging for 1+ minutes, but it still gave the same message. I was desperate to print something, so I ran out and paid $130 for all new cartridges. I installed them but the printer still gives me the same message! Now I'm out over $100 and it still won't print. Help!

Hi @QUEENSUSAN13,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds very frustrating to deal with that error message, especially after investing in new cartridges. Here are several troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve the "New, unused cartridges must be used for startup" error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720.
Check Compatibility: Make sure the new cartridges are compatible with your HP 8720 printer. They should be genuine HP cartridges or compatible models explicitly designed for your printer.
Reinstall Cartridges: Remove all cartridges from the printer and check for any packaging materials that may still be attached. Then, carefully reinstall the cartridges:
- Ensure you insert them correctly by matching the color coding.
- Press down firmly until they click into place.
Power Cycle the Printer: After reinstalling the cartridges, power cycle the printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 5-10 minutes before plugging it back in and turning it on.
Check for Firmware Updates: If you can access the printer’s control panel, check if there's a firmware update available:
- Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete any updates.
Reset the Printer: Perform a factory reset:
- On the printer's control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
- Note that this will reset all settings to default, so you'll need to reconfigure your preferences afterward.
Check for Obstructions: Inspect the cartridge area for any obstructions or debris that may prevent proper cartridge seating.
Try a Different Set of Cartridges: If possible, try a different set of cartridges to see if the issue persists. This could help determine if the problem is with the printer or the cartridges.
Hopefully, one of these steps will help you get your printer back to normal functioning!
Take care and have a good day.

I've been through all those steps several times now. It was partially successful. It now recognizes tow of the cartridges (black and magenta) but still says the yellow and cyan are unacceptable. Any other ideas? I'm getting desperate... This is the printer I use for work and it's been inaccessible for two weeks! I will happily pay for help at this point, but can't find anyone to pay!
