Welcome to the HP English Community --

Mystery printer might be one of the many HP printers that requires HP chipped cartridges.

If true, then refilled or re-manufactured, ink used in a printer that requires an HP chip must indeed have the chip.

If you are using refilled or re-manufactured cartridges, ask you ink supplier whether they are using HP chipped cartridges.

Yeah, but what about...

"Cartridge Protection" - likely found in the Printer Control Panel and present in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) connection to the printer, is used to prevent theft of ink cartridges from one printer (or fleet of printers) and then used in a different printer.

Cartridge Protection is not meant to disable the Dynamic Security that prevents use of non-HP chipped cartridges.

My Printer is 8 years old 8710 all in one It is out of warranty and was purchased with no limits on brand of Ink. I have been using these non hp ink cartridges for 3 years,, This is very distressful and a Poor Decision by HP. So if I cannot use these my options are Buy a new Printer of Pay 3X as much for genuine Hp Cartridges

True - it's frustrating when you believe your printer is not included in the limitation.

What to do?

Check below -- it your printer is indeed as old as you say, and it meets all the criteria outlined in the document, then the Dynamic Security does not apply -- the firmware limitation would never have been implemented.

If this is the case, that is, your printer meets the criteria for age and model, do check with your ink supplier.

Note:

Even on printers where the practice is tolerated by the printer due to age and model, there is no support for using non-HP ink.
