Microsoft Windows 11

I purchased a #C2P01FN Option 140 Printer Cartdridge 4-pack from a major retailer of office supplies to replace the 951XL "Yellow" cartridge in my HP OfficeJet 8600 with a 951 "Yellow" cartridge. The warranty on these official HP cartridges expires on 2025/09. When I inserted the NEW cartridge into the printer it immediately generated an error message telling me to reset the printer or power cycle the printer. I did this many times with the same result. If I re-install the old 951XL "Yellow" cartridge the problem is immediately fixed and the error message is resolved. Are there any ideas?

Hi @UserInTroy,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you’re having trouble with the new 951 "Yellow" cartridge in your HP OfficeJet 8600. Here are some steps to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that the 951 "Yellow" cartridge is compatible with your HP OfficeJet 8600. The printer is designed for the 951XL cartridges, but it should also work with the non-XL versions. Double-check the packaging and the HP website for compatibility information.
  • Inspect the Cartridge: Examine the new cartridge for any physical defects, such as damaged or dirty contacts. Sometimes, manufacturing defects can cause issues.
  • Clean Cartridge Contacts: Gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth. Avoid touching the nozzles and contacts with your fingers.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Make sure your printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates include fixes for compatibility issues with cartridges.
  • Reset the Printer: Perform a hard reset on your printer. Turn it off, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Reinstall the Cartridge: After cleaning and resetting, reinstall the new cartridge carefully. Make sure it clicks into place and is properly seated.
  • Check for Error Codes: If the printer displays an error code or message, consult the HP support website or user manual for specific troubleshooting steps related to that error.
  • Try a Different Cartridge: If possible, test another new 951 "Yellow" cartridge to see if the issue persists. It could be a problem with the specific cartridge you received.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
