HP OfficeJet Pro 8023 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

As  of this morning, the printer will no longer accept new HP cartridges- returns a message about them  being damaged.

is there a reason for this ? is there a solution for this?

Already wasted three highly overpriced HP cartridges ( 2 red, and 1black). These are HP cartridges bought from one of several reputable high street shops. So no reason to assume that these are fake.

Apparently we are no longer under warranty . Though this issue seems to be probably more about unscrupulous trade practices than an engineering issue, as the empty cartridges are still recognized.

If someone can provide an answer soon, I would be grateful. Before we have to go out and buy a new printer for our home office (obviously HP is not on the list of options).

Hi @john19571964,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out to HP Support, and we appreciate you sharing your concerns.

We understand how frustrating it is to have your HP OfficeJet Pro 8023 All-in-One Printer reject genuine HP cartridges, especially when they’ve been purchased from reputable high-street retailers. Let us address your concerns clearly and directly.

1. Reinstall Cartridges One by One

Try this reset method:

  1. Remove all cartridges.
  2. Power off the printer and unplug it for 10–15 minutes.
  3. Plug it back in and power on.
  4. Insert one cartridge at a time, starting with black.
  5. Wait for the printer to recognize each before inserting the next

2. Clean Cartridge Contacts

  • Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab with a bit of distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Gently clean the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.

3. Check for Firmware Updates

  • On the printer’s control panel:
Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer
Or from HP Smart app > Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Tools > Printer Updates
  • Update to the latest firmware, then try reinserting the cartridges again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
