HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer

MY printer had run out of ink ion 2 cartridges. I opened the door to have the cartridge carries move to the left and replaced the empty cartridges with hp cartridges. I  closed the door and received the error message that the cartridges were damaged . I re-opened the door and removed and replaced the cartridges back again.  Now all four cartridges were saying they were damaged. I got all new cartridges and replaced them all. I read to remove the printer head three times and replace it with the cartridges I did that with n0 change. I reset the printer by removing the power plug as instructed. Now the carries does not move to the left and I cannot access the cartridges. Have tired all remedies with no luck. Any ideas or is time to trash the printer. It is about 6-7 years old now.
