Hi @Dshap,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 is printing too light despite having new cartridges, there are several potential causes to consider, such as cartridge issues, print head problems, or incorrect printer settings. Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Cartridge Installation

  • Open the printer cover and check each cartridge to ensure it is securely seated.
  • Reinstall the cartridges if necessary.

2. Align Print Heads

  • On your printer's control panel, go to the "Settings" or "Setup" menu.
  • Select "Printer Maintenance" or "Tools" and choose "Align Printheads."
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the alignment process.

3. Clean Print Heads

  • On your printer's control panel, go to "Settings" or "Setup."
  • Select "Printer Maintenance" or "Tools" and choose "Clean Printheads."
  • Follow the prompts to clean the print heads. You may need to run the cleaning cycle more than once.

4. Print Quality Settings

  • When printing, go to the print dialog box in your application.
  • Click on "Printer Properties" or "Preferences."
  • Select a higher quality setting (e.g., "Best" or "High Quality").

5. Check Ink Levels

  • On the printer control panel, check the ink levels.
  • If any cartridge shows low ink despite being new, it might be defective and need replacement.

6. Update Printer Firmware

  • Go to the HP Support website and check for any available firmware updates for your OfficeJet Pro 8020.
  • Download and install any updates following the provided instructions.

7. Use Genuine HP Cartridges

  • Genuine Cartridges: Ensure that you are using genuine HP cartridges, as third-party or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause print quality issues.

8. Perform a Printer Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

9. Check for Software Issues

  • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for your OfficeJet Pro 8020.
  • Install the drivers and restart your computer.

10. Perform a Test Print

  • On the printer control panel, go to "Settings" or "Setup."
  • Select "Printer Maintenance" or "Tools" and choose "Print Quality Report" or "Print Test Page."

11. Check Paper Quality and Type

  • Paper Quality: Ensure that you are using the correct type and quality of paper for your print job.
    • Poor quality or incorrect paper types can affect print output.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
