I have bought two new sets of cartridges for my office jet pro 8600. The first set I got the ink system failure message. I put the old cartridges in I did not get that message. So I assumed the cartridges were defective.
I returned them to the store and got a new set with a different expiration date on them.
Now the 2 colors originally needing to be replaced show “empty” even though they are full and now error message states they “appear to be damaged“.
I have turned it off turned it back on, unplugged it, unplugged it with a combination of turning it off and turning it back on, I have turned it off, unplugged it and pressed power button for 15 seconds. I have cleaned off the contacts with 91% alcohol and replaced the cartridges. Any more suggestions?

Hi @SueRed
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 is having trouble recognizing the new cartridges, even after multiple replacements and troubleshooting steps. This issue could be related to the printer's printhead, firmware, or cartridge compatibility.
Here’s how you can address it:
Step 1: Verify Cartridge Compatibility
- Ensure the cartridges are original HP cartridges compatible with your printer model (e.g., HP 950 or HP 951 series).
- Check the packaging for the expiration date and verify that the cartridges are not expired.
Step 2: Clean the Printhead
- Open the printer’s cartridge access door and remove all cartridges.
- Lift the latch to remove the printhead.
- Clean the gold contacts on the printhead and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
- Allow the printhead to dry completely before reinstalling it.
- Reinsert the printhead and cartridges, ensuring they click into place properly.
Step 3: Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for 2–3 minutes.
- Plug it back in and turn it on to reset the system.
Step 4: Update Firmware
- Visit the HP Support page for your printer model and download the latest firmware. Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support
- Install the firmware update and restart the printer.
Step 5: Test with Known Good Cartridges
- If possible, try using a different set of cartridges (preferably new ones) to see if the issue persists.
- This will help determine if the problem lies with the cartridges or the printer.
