I have been trying to print on my 8620 and the message appears “ One or more cartridges appear to be damaged. Remove them and replace with new cartridges.”
So far I have tried:
1. removing the cartridge, it is the black cartridge, and replacing it with another brand new cartridge. That brand new cartridge has the same message.
2. I also tried turning off the printer and unplugging it for 60 seconds then resetting the printer by unplugging it from the back and unplugging the electrical outlet.
3. I tried to download new firmware, but my computer said my printer is not available for downloading new firmware, which I guess means that it is already updated.
4. I also tried cleaning the print head with a lint free cloth and rubbing alcohol and the cartridges.
It should be noted that this message appeared after I received a message, saying the print or ink system has failed. I fixed that by replacing all of the cartridges. Now it is just saying this one cartridge, the black one appears to be damaged. Also, this whole mess started when my printer told me the black cartridge was out of ink and I replaced it with a brand new one.

@Cjm333, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Check Compatibility:
- Ensure the cartridge is compatible with your HP 8620 printer model.
Remove and Reinsert Cartridges:
- Turn the printer on.
- Open the ink cartridge access door.
- Wait for the print carriage to stop moving.
- Press the tab on the cartridge to release it and remove it from its slot.
- Check for any protective tape still covering the ink nozzles and contacts, and remove it if present.
- Reinsert the cartridge until it clicks into place.
Clean Cartridge Contacts:
- Gather lint-free cloths and distilled, filtered, or bottled water.
- Remove the cartridge again.
- Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using the lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water.
- Allow the contacts to dry for a few minutes before reinserting the cartridge.
