HP Envy 5020

I see others have had a similar issue but my HP Envy 5020 Printer has rubbish print quality. The print on the page is very faint in places so unable to read. The app shows there is sufficient ink and I have followed the trouble shooting guidance with no success. I've done the print quality diagnostic tool at least twice and it's made no difference. The colour blocks on the test sheet aren't quite as bad as the black one but they are all faded with white lines through. I've checked for updates but it says it is up to date so I cant see what else to do. I'm part of the instant ink programme but as we don't print many pages, we haven't had any new cartridges since shortly after we had the printer (late 2019). The HP Support website was unhelpful because the printer is out of warranty . Can anyone suggest a solution? I'm not sure if the cartridges are out of date but I wonder if that could be the issue as I see someone else found that resolved it.
