Recently installed new ink cartridges. Now my OfficeJet Pro 6978 will not print black or blue. I have tried cleaning printheads through the electronic settings and it has not dramatically fixed the problem.

wondering how I can restore the printing ability as I was printing on this 5 days ago no issues and now no blue or black (can’t print word documents with black ink for work)

please let me know any and all solutions/remedies

Hi @Bg5099

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer after installing new cartridges. Here’s a detailed troubleshooting guide to help restore the ability to print black and blue:

1. Verify Cartridge Installation

  • Remove the black and blue ink cartridges and ensure they are properly seated in the correct slots.
  • Check for protective tape (if the cartridges are new) and ensure it’s removed.
  • Reinsert the cartridges until you hear a click, signaling secure placement.

2. Check Ink Levels

  • Open the HP Smart app or printer software on your computer to review the ink levels.
  • If the printer detects low or empty cartridges, replace them with fresh ones.

3. Manually Clean the Printheads

  • Open the printer’s cartridge compartment and carefully remove the cartridges.
  • Inspect the printheads and wipe them gently with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
  • Allow the printheads to dry before reinserting the cartridges.

4. Run Deep Cleaning via Printer Settings

  • Access the Maintenance menu on the printer or through the HP Smart app.
  • Run the Deep Printhead Cleaning tool (different from regular cleaning) to clear stubborn clogs.

5. Perform a Test Page

  • Print a Test Page to check if black and blue inks are restored:
    • Navigate to the printer settings and select the Print Test Page option.
    • Look for color alignment or print quality issues.

6. Update Printer Firmware

7. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, then reconnect and turn it back on. This clears temporary glitches.

8. Inspect the Paper and Print Settings

  • Ensure the paper type matches the printer settings (e.g., plain paper for documents).
  • Check the print settings to confirm black and blue ink usage is enabled.
