My HP photosmart Printer 5520 is not happy with the pink ink and the screen is black so I cant look at options. The ink is HP. I have tried turning the printer off and on, unplugging it etc. I have tried taking the ink cartridges out.

Hi @LucyClara, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
sounds like your Photosmart 5520 is giving you the silent treatment, quite literally! A stubborn printer with a blacked-out screen and an ink tantrum is not what we signed up for. But don’t worry, we’ll troubleshoot our way out of this pink-ink rebellion.
Try the following steps:
Hard Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from power
- Wait for 5 minutes
- Plug it back in and turn it on
Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Remove the pink (magenta) ink cartridge
- Use a lint-free cloth to wipe the metal contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer
- Reinsert the cartridge firmly and restart the printer
Check for Clogged Printheads
Since your screen is black, you’ll need to force a cleaning cycle:
- Press and hold Power + Cancel buttons for 5-10 seconds
- Release and see if the printer starts a cleaning process
Try a Different Magenta Cartridge
- Even if it’s genuine HP ink, it could be faulty
- Replace it with a new magenta cartridge
Connect to HP Smart App
Since the screen is black, you can check printer errors on your PC or phone:
- Install HP Smart App
- Connect your printer and check for error message.
Let’s see if we can bring your printer back from the dark side. Try these steps and let me know how it goes. We’re not letting a moody ink cartridge win this battle! 💪🖨️
